Its been a busy week for the Wu’s….100 club, Boro, angry midgets and projectile vomiting.
Last Thursday we descended on The 100 Club, Oxford Street, surely one of the most famous smaller venues in central London. I spent the first half hour strolling round ogling the endless photos of rock legends that have graced the very platform we were about to play on. One photo shows Townshend, Richards and Clapton sharing the same stage….imagine the after-party that night….fooking bangin’!
This was Alex ‘the barnet’ Kews first gig with us (he uses Treseme conditioner if you’re interested girls) and what a gig it was to get him started. A cracking turn-out, most of whom were punk rockers there to see headline act Spizz mark his 30th anniversary. After sound check my mouth was like a Guatemalan Witchdoctors shammy leather joo joo bag so Kew and I hit the bar for a pint of toffee flavoured Becks and a bag ‘o nuts. Its difficult to get a great sound in the 100 club due to its shape and cavernous high ceilings but we pretty much nailed it in terms of performance and even the punks seemed to be diggin’ it, except for the midget in a tank-top on the front row who insisted on heckling us throughout the set. Hecklers usually put me in a right bad mood but this little dude just gave me a fit of the giggles….reminded me of that little guy from Me, Myself & Irene. Good effort from Kew on his debut!
Quick rehearsal on the Friday then up early on Saturday for the 250 mile trip up to my home town of Middlesbrough for our first gig in the North-East. Stunning pace from the Wu-car and Samuel Terrific got us up there in under 4 hours, with plenty of time to sink a few beers and watch the England match. I should point out that Sam and I are the football fanatics in the band….the three Alex’s aren’t huge fans of the Soccerball and prefer croquet, rounders and tiddlywinks.
What an awesome night! Thanks to everyone who came down to see us at The Arena and fellow rock ‘n’ rollers Jimmy and the Sounds for sorting us out with a slot (and me owld mate Spud the promoter)….and our Ma for knocking up a top curry for us before the gig. Even 30 minutes of electric shocks in the mouth couldn’t spoil it although I felt like Leslie Ash for a couple of hours after. Its been a long time since I’ve thrown that many shapes in one night! Up the Boro!
Woke up to a text from Weeman on Sunday morning proclaiming that he’d discovered, purchased and devoured some sort of vegetarian Parmo (if you’re not familiar with the sacred Boro delicacy, go here – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parmo) which he said was stunning. I’ve never heard of a veggie Parmo (what’d be the point!) so I was most interested by this news. Anyway, on turning up at Casa Marron, Weeman tells me that the “veggie” Parmo was called a Parmesan Funghi….he’d only gone and scoffed a normal Parmo….a giant slab of chicken with mushrooms on top. Excellent mate! I’m determined to get a T-Bone steak down his neck before the years out….you veggies don’t know what you’re missing out on! If anyones ever up near Boro, I strongly recommend you sample a Parmo….they’re amazing….especially after 10 pints!
In other news, Wutar Towers resident wino Frunk has bought a Saxaphone so look out for Careless Whisper style creamy sax lines on future material. Right….I’m off to pawn my shoes and buy Beatles rock band….
Stay safe you lot and big thanks for your support.
