Sequins and pearls and lots of pretty girls
A recent Rebellion fuelled night saw the band reflecting on their songbook, browse their booze stained thoughts and memories below. We’ll be adding some downloads soon, for you to frug and shimmy to. Feedback most welcome on the blog!
WASTE MY DAYS AWAY (Download this awustic)
Alex- One of many tunes written dans la salle de la bain, this time the Filthy MacNasty’s crapper. Power, melody and a cracking rhythm section; this is the sound of the Wutars compressed down into three and a half minutes of pure brilliance in A minor. My personal favourite, along with all of the other songs. (here’s a rough video and lyrics too!)
THIS TOWN IS NOT THE ENEMY (Sam)
- Short lived in our set, a song about the demise of one of the only places in London that still had some ‘identity’
- I’m getting drunk now
- Not a well known Wutar tune but a little bit vital in its own way
GAMLASTAN – Download (Sam)
- Summed up our trip to Sweden in the opening lines brilliantly. One of the best times away of my life
- Love playing it on drums
- Still one of my favourite songs to play

STAY UP STAY UP (Alex) Buy it – you slag
This was written after a night out with one Lucy Kitt, a glorious singer-songwriter and little bit of an old flame. It is an ode to rallying against the banality of the routine that is a staple of one’s rite of passage of being brought into the adult world of squares, stressheads and toilers, and to the hope that we should all hold, that there is something more exciting and BETTER out there for you if you listen to your gut feeling rather than your work rota. The music is inspired by a band called the Great Blind Degree, who are the greatest band of all time. Lyrics
THE FUCK YOU BLUES (Maz)
The first Wutar choon to have a naughty swear word in the title (bad boys!). Two bar drum solo before each chorus courtesy of Samuel Terrific. I remember drunken revellers singing along to this in the White Horse despite none of them having a Scooby about the words.
FORTUNE (go on download and rock!) (Alex)
A little thankyou to My Vitriol for providing the world with ‘Always, Your Way’. The first song I wrote that I felt was truly great, apart from the ones I wrote before it. (An awustic vid awaits you and lyrics)
DAVID (Vally)
Cut yer fucking strings! A very early tune this, and one I use to watch the others play and thought “these guys are what it’s all about. No patronising, no trying to be clever, just brilliant tunes played with passion”. There will always be a place in my heart for good old David, and it’s a pure pleasure to share a stage with him! Lyrics
OH ROISIN (Kewie)
Weeman first played this to me in the kitchen of a house I used to live in, I thought he had nicked it from Garden State’s ‘War Machine” but it wasn’t. He is in fact singing “Oh Roisin” which is Irish or Welsh. I sing back-up vocals on the Wutars’ EP and I’m running out of space to write. Words
WHISPER (Kewie)
A fine example of Wutar plagiarism. A familiar ditty that sounds like another song that someone else wrote. It’s good. I like it. I don’t have a clue what it’s about but I like singing along to it. It’s very good. I used to do an amusing impression of Alex singing it. it’s good. I’m drunk. X
Singalong to EP
DIFFERENT STORY (Kewie)
A marvellous song by Maz Manzini. A song he will usually dedicate to the northerners at a gig. As far as I’m aware it’s about people who settled down too early and no longer partake in “AVIN IT LARGE”.
This fine tune is midfield general on Wutars Debut EP, a snip at a fiver. Help us fund EP2, buy now and Shout-a-long!
SPECIAL K (Maz)
This reminds me, not of Kelloggs, but of playing a rather nice bass line in a lilac shirt, black tie and purple velvet jacket. It reminds me of four mop tops playing their first gig at Bucks Student Union supporting Dive Dive. First gig and I played through a fuck-off amazing bass stack. Get in!
OH LA LA LA (Alex)
I wrote this in the toilet of Camden’s Purple Turtle, pissed and bored. Inspired by a band called M.A.S.S. and some no-hopers I saw at the Wilmington. The riff sounds like the Who’s ‘A Legal Matter’ but this is entirely co-incidental. (Watch here - sounds much better on EP!)

SEAMONKEY – Newest addition to live set, sign up for email to get this one!
(Vally) One for the dancers. Primal. Emotional. Jaunty. Sexy. Great rhythm track. Two top solos. Small on words but big on passion! As for subject: to me it sounds like knowing you can be amazingly good but slipping into the dark side and hating yourself for it.

TEA DRINKERS OF THE WORLD (Maz)
Tea… I could have a degree. In tea. Earl Grey, Typhoo and PG. I remember Weeman and Matt playing this at a mad party at Kitchener Road shortly before we went outside and necked half a litre of Prague’s finest Absinthe. Lyrics
DRAMAS AND BANANAS (Maz)
Capo 1st fret., makes all the girls wet. Makes me think of the first time we played Lark in the Park. We powered into this as the set opener. I remember seeing Charlie the night before and feeling drained… but this choon gave me a lift.

SATURDAY NIGHT (Vally)
Our most romantic tune about a night we’ve all been through at some time or another. A good old-fashioned love song which in my opinion needs a Bacharach/Spector/’Be Here Now-era Oasis production to soar to its true heights.
PUT ON A SHOW (Download this tune – now!)
SAM – The first tune that I felt “we fucking rock”
- Aggressive, sexy, great lead riff
- Brilliant lyrics: “rolling lips and naked hips /oh baby / lady extraodinaire”
- remember playing it down the White Horse and the kids dancing to it. Lyrics
SHIRLEY (by Kewie)
From Weeman’s explanation of it ‘live’, it’s about a girl he used to work with and he wanted to “plough” her. Very romantic – it’s also got references to blowjobs – which is nice.

A SONG WILL BUY YOU TIME (by Vally)
A stadium-sized singalong anthem in waiting, and one to wrap your arm around your mate to. I wish I was Will Young too – if only for the anonymity. (heres it on video and some words)
EXTENSIVE RESEARCH (by Sam)
One of the first songs the Wutars recorded in it’s original 4 piece line up. Frenetic drums with a great rhythm guitar track. An argument with himself or about someone? Maybe we’ll never know! Certainly a Wutar classic track though! (here’s a really old video) Sing along!
TWENTY THREE (awustic download) (by Kewie)
‘Ballad Of A Skint Man’. A fond look on life as a student with little money working in a cafe to make ends meet. Dreams of riches, stardom, comfort and luxury. Here’s the words!
